Treatment
How do treatments work?
Neuromuscular trigger-point therapy is a highly specialized branch of massage that utilizes advanced concepts in the science and art of pressure therapy. From the superficial skin and fascia to the deepest layers of muscles, tendons and ligaments, therapists are trained to search for any pain being caused by hypertension. Each therapist is licensed and uniquely trained to examine sensitivity in the tissues, triggerpoints, postural distortions, abnormality in gait, muscle tonality, joint movement, and flexibility. With the use of stretching and pressure techniques implemented with the hands, arms, or a small soft tipped pressure tool, they help relax tissues and restore proper balance and function to the body. It has been common for many of our clients to experience as much as 50-100% relief in pain, sleep disturbances, poor circulation, low energy and joint immobility, and an increase in overall comfort in just 1-6 sessions.
Outside referrals are made when necessary, to trusted colleagues for specific diagnosis or treatment of leg length discrepancies, strength or flexibility programs, dietary needs and nutritional or detoxification information. If we can’t help you, we will find someone who can.
Who can benefit from neuromuscular therapy?
Virtually anyone can benefit from hands-on treatment of their muscles. Infants, children, teens, adults, the elderly, handicapped individuals, elite athletes, and even self-proclaimed couch potatoes find tremendous value. The entire population could potentially benefit from this therapy designed to clear away the “build up” of accumulated tension and triggerpoints, to promote circulation and encourage relaxation in the mind and body. The younger we are when we start understanding the role of our soft tissues the better. Much like brushing, flossing, and having regular check-ups with your doctor or dentist, everyone’s soft tissues need stretching, exercise, and manual care on an annual basis.
How many treatments will I need?
Healing is a biological process and it can vary from person to person depending on age, state of health, how much damage has occurred, current stress factors and the length of time the condition has existed. But as a general rule most people do not need more than 6-10 consecutive sessions in order to receive tremendous benefit. With the educational information shared during the therapy and subsequent relief experienced, most people become interested in choosing some type of musculoskeletal maintenance “every 3000 miles” just as they would do with their vehicles. This is ideal.
Is the treatment painful?
Tenderness and mild muscle soreness are common with the first few sessions. However, most people describe what is felt as a “relieving discomfort,” like scratching an itch or a “hurts so good” feeling. We are simply “messengers,” finding and clearing away tension currently existing in your muscles.
And what is most important to remember is that we strive to work within the comfort zone of each person. It is always asked that you communicate with us while we are working to stretch and relax your muscles, since making sure you have a good experience, as well as getting great results, are our primary goals.
How will I feel after treatments?
Many people go right back to work after their first few sessions feeling fine; others tell us that they were so tired they could hardly stay awake. Some describe feeling achy or sore for a day or two, and still others report euphoric sensations with the best night’s sleep they’ve had in years. How you will feel afterwards depends on how full of tension, acids, and metabolic wastes your tissues were, how much water you drink each day, what your diet is like, your current level of fitness, your lifestyle and what you choose to do after treatments. Sessions are highly informative and educational and along with us, you will learn a great deal about your body, what works and what does not work for you as an individual. We are sensitive to your bodily responses and feedback and treatments are always tailored for each person and their individual needs.
What is the role of exercise and stretching?
Primitive man was able to conquer nearly all of his stress with physical expression and action. Though modern man has greater social limitations in responding to stress, it does not change the fact that we need outlets and movement every day to stay healthy. We were designed to spend our days reaching, bending, twisting, dancing, singing, jumping, walking, running, and expressing outwardly in so many different ways. Sitting or standing all day with slouchy posture and little to no social atmosphere in which to express negative emotion was not the original plan. The implementation of regular stretching and routine exercise is essential to a quality life and to ending stress-tension-pain cycles.
What about athletics and sports injury?
The intense muscle contraction and periodic strain which often accompany athletic workouts and events can set the stage for the accumulation of acidic wastes, muscle spasms, pain, and triggerpoints. Neuromuscular therapy and sports massage increase blood flow, speed the removal of metabolic wastes and promote rapid recovery. Strength, power, agility, and stamina all depend on a muscles ability to relax and lengthen as well as its ability to contract and “pump up.” Quite often, it is this aspect of flexibility that is not taken very seriously. Research has concluded that when preventive soft tissue care, proper flexibility, and balance accompany strength and endurance, common athletic and sporting injuries are reduced 85-90%.
