Pain
What causes chronic pain?
Pain is a normal and natural distress signal when we have been injured or are suffering from undo amounts of pressure or “stress”. This stress can arise from things like physical or mental tension, the over or under use of the body, structural imbalances, fatigue, etc. Believe it or not, pain is the truest friend you’ll ever have, with nothing but your survival, health, well being and happiness at the root of its cry for help. Internal and external sensors located within our bodies, and throughout our soft tissues, monitor our internal and external environment 24 hours a day. Signals then alert the brain and reflex command centers of the stressors upon us at any given moment. When the variables causing an overload become too great, the body always reacts with increased muscular tension to what it perceives as a threat. Pain, therefore, is an effect, not the original cause.
The role of stress
Too much stress in the system causes an increase in muscular tension, and increased states of muscular tension cause nerve entrapment, poor circulation, joint compression, and pain. It’s that simple. This pain-tension-pain pattern can become so stuck and chronic that often outside forces and assistance are the only way to stop it. Stiff, sore, achy muscles, teeth grinding, sleep disorders, poor energy, and on-again off-again pain can all be early warning signs of increasing states of pressure in the body and mind.
Here are just a few causes of the stress-tension-pain cycle:
- Overly contracted or extended soft tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments and connective tissue/fascia).
- Improper balance, arrangement of movement of the skeletal system.
- Inflammation, swelling or any other sources of internal pressure.
- Inadequate intake or absorption of water and nutrition.
- Too much or too little exercise, poor flexibility, strength or overall fitness.
- Inadequate rest, oxygen, sunshine, or other bodily needs.
- Sustained emotional stimulation.
- Dietary or environmental stimulants.
- Accumulation of internal wastes and toxins.
- Prolonged depression or unhappiness.
